What is Bowen therapy
Bowen Therapy (also called Bowen Technique) is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy that uses light, precise soft-tissue moves, often with short pauses between sets. Sessions are typically calm and are tailored to how you’re feeling on the day. (bowen.asn.au)
At Tuggeranong Chiropractic Centre and Tuggeranong Therapeutic Massage, Bowen Therapy is offered as a standalone appointment or as supportive care alongside other evidence-based treatment and exercise plans, where appropriate. (bowen.asn.au)
Why people choose Bowen Therapy
People often seek Bowen Therapy because it is:
- Gentle and adaptable (pressure, positioning and session length can be modified)
- Often comfortable even when you’re sensitive or run down
- Simple and unhurried, with a focus on relaxation and ease of movement (bowen.asn.au)
As with any therapy, responses vary between individuals and we avoid promising specific outcomes. (AHPRA)
What Bowen Therapy may help with
Bowen Therapy is commonly used to support comfort and mobility in a range of musculoskeletal presentations. People often book Bowen for:
- general muscle tension and stiffness
- neck, back or shoulder discomfort
- feeling “tight” after work, sport or prolonged sitting
- stress-related tension and difficulty switching off
If you have multiple health conditions, recent surgery, or you’re currently under medical care, we can help you decide whether Bowen Therapy is suitable right now.
What to expect at your appointment
1) Brief history and goal-setting
We’ll ask what’s bringing you in, what aggravates/eases it, and any relevant medical history.
2) The treatment
Bowen Therapy involves gentle moves over muscles, tendons and connective tissue, usually with pauses in between. Many people remain clothed (light clothing is ideal), and we’ll use pillows/supports to keep you comfortable. (bowen.asn.au)
3) Aftercare
You may be given simple guidance (for example, activity pacing and what to monitor after the session). If anything doesn’t feel right after treatment, we’ll advise you on the next steps.
Safety and suitability
Bowen Therapy is generally considered a low-force approach, but we’ll still screen carefully and modify or postpone if needed.
Please let us know if you have:
- fever, infection, or feel acutely unwell
- a new, unexplained swelling, calf pain, chest pain, or shortness of breath
- recent fracture/major trauma, or severe/rapidly worsening symptoms
- significant osteoporosis, known bone fragility, or cancer involving bone
- pregnancy, recent surgery, or complex medical care (we may request guidance from your treating team)
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical care. If you have severe pain, neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, pins and needles), or “red flag” symptoms, you should seek prompt medical assessment.
